BECOMING AN EQUITY FACILITATOR

Engage and guide yourself and others in the process of creating and establishing an active equity team at your school site(s).

WHAT IS AN "EQUITY FACILITATOR"?

As an equity facilitator, your goal is to engage and guide yourself and others in the process of creating and establishing an active equity team at your school site(s).

An equity facilitator is anyone who has the passion and will to start up, grow, and sustain an active and transformative equity team at his or her school site(s). The facilitator is not necessarily an expert of Courageous Conversations, but instead is a person with the desire to be a champion for change for equity. Everyone on the equity team can be a facilitator. As everyone continues their growth in the equity team, they will become equity leaders of their communities as more Courageous Conversations happen.

WHAT IS AN "EQUITY TEAM"?

From Glenn E. Singleton’s Courageous Conversations about Race (p. 239):

  • Equity Teams, or “E-Teams”, include emerging leaders who wish to develop their will, skill, knowledge, and capacity to support their colleagues in understanding race and deinstitutionalizing racism.

  • E-Team membership is predicated on having the passion for understanding equity and the courage to lead at the system, school site, or classroom level toward anti-racist education.

The responsibility of the E-Team is threefold:

  • Engage in a process of investigation to discover how race impacts their personal and professional beliefs and behaviors.

  • Lead the schools or central office staff in the examination of individual and institutional culture as it relates to equity and anti-racism.

  • Establish a professional learning community in which adults can effectively develop skills and knowledge necessary to improve student performance and eliminate racial achievement disparities.

HOW DO I START MY EQUITY TEAM?

The first step in building your Equity Team is to become more familiar with the work of Glenn Singleton and the Courageous Conversation Protocol. To support you in this process, we are providing you with an abridgment and facilitator guide for each part of his book. To get started for the first time, go into Part 1 above and open the Facilitator’s Guide. This will walk you through the steps to start your E-Team and facilitate your first of many Courageous Conversations about race.
