Collegeboard Exams

AP Exams are administered in 7 subject categories that students can take that help students stand out on college applications by showing that they’ve challenged themselves with the most rigorous course(s) available to them since. AP Courses are modeled on comparable introductory college courses in each subject, and their success on the exam demonstrates they are ready for college-level coursework. AP exams also allow students to earn college credit and/or skip introductory courses in college.

A student does not need to be enrolled in an AP class to take the exam, although research by The College Board shows that students who take the courses do better on the exams, and are therefore more likely to earn AP credits.

AP exams will be administered in schools as paper-and-pencil* exams over two weeks in May:
May 2–6 and May 9–13. **Late testing dates are available if students cannot test during the first two weeks of May: May 17 - 20

The PSAT/NMSQT measures the skills and knowledge that current research shows are essential for college and career readiness and success. The PSAT/NMSQT serves as a check-in on student progress to help pinpoint areas for development. The PSAT/NMSQT helps students prepare for the SAT and provides entry to the National Merit® Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

The ACT test covers four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. It also offers an optional direct writing test.

The ACT test is designed for the 10th, 11th, and/or 12th grade levels to provide schools and districts with the data necessary to position students for success after high school.

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Exams

Summative Assessments for ELA and mathematics are next-generation assessments that were developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, a multistate, state-led consortium. These tests are aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in ELA and mathematics that accurately measure student progress toward college- and career-readiness. Consistent with the Smarter Balanced testing plan and California’s educational mission, all students, including students with disabilities, English learners (ELs), and ELs with disabilities, should have equal opportunity to participate in assessments administered in California.

These online tests, for ELA and mathematics and the science assessment, are administered to eligible students whose disability prevents them from taking the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for ELA and mathematics and the CAST. Students who are identified for an alternate assessment will take all the alternate assessments to which they have been assigned.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is a comprehensive, health-related physical fitness battery of tests for students enrolled in grades seven and nine in California. The State Board of Education designated the FITNESSGRAM® as the PFT for students in California public schools. The test has six parts that show a level of fitness that offer a degree of defense against diseases that come from inactivity. The test results can be used by students, teachers, and parents. The FITNESSGRAM® consists of six fitness areas: Aerobic Capacity, Abdominal Strength and Endurance, Upper Body Strength and Endurance, Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility, Body Composition, and Flexibility.

On September 18, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 820. SB 820 prescribes that, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to comply with state and local health guidelines, the administration of the physical performance test shall be suspended for the 2020–21 school year.

Therefore, the PFT will not be required to be administered and the California Department of Education (CDE) will not be collecting PFT data for the 2020–21 school year.

Contact the PFT Office if you have questions regarding the PFT program or policies by email at pft@cde.ca.gov.

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the mandated state test for determining English language proficiency (ELP). It is administered as an initial assessment to newly enrolled students whose primary language is not English, as indicated on a home language survey; and annually as a summative assessment to students who have been previously identified as EL students. The ELPAC is aligned with the 2012 California English Language Development Standards (PDF) .

The ELPAC is delivered via a computer-based test delivery platform. The four domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) will be administered on computer except for the Writing domain for kindergarten through grade two, which will remain as a paper-based test.

  • Summative ELPAC—annual assessment to measure an EL student's progress and to identify the student's ELP level.
  • Initial ELPAC—primary identification of students as English learners (ELs).
  • Alternate ELPAC—annual assessment to measure and identify the student's ELP level, for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.
  • Summative ELPAC Testing Window: Feb. 1-May 31, 2022
  • Initial ELPAC Testing Window: July 6, 2021-June 30, 2022
  • SA ELPAC Training of Trainers: Dec. 3, 2021
  • Alternate ELPAC Statewide Operational Field Test is November 1, 2021, through February 15, 2022.
