This abridgment is a condensed form of the first four chapters of the book. Its purpose is to give you a summary of the text, while keeping the key ideas and information. There is no added information or opinion associated with this abridgment.
The achievement gap is a conversation all too familiar to educators across the United States. In this book the authors argue the need for candid, courageous conversations about race. These conversations are necessary if we are to understand students and why performance inequality exists. This book is a guide for beginning these conversations and how to help create a learning community that promotes true academic equity.
This facilitator guide is built to support you in creating equity teams at your school site and help you in implementing a condensed version of the Courageous Conversation Protocol outlined in Glenn E. Singleton’s “Courageous Conversations About Race: A Field Guide for Achieving Equity in Schools.” It is not required for you to read the book, however, we will be making references to our abridgment of the book throughout this facilitator’s guide.
FACILITATOR TRAINING
The Skyrocket Professional Development team has been becoming familiar with the work of Glenn E. Singleton’s book Courageous Conversations About Race: A Field Guide for Achieving Equity in Schools. This training is meant for educators that are committed to facilitating courageous conversations about race at their center. Training will include a courageous conversation about race and strategies outlined in the book for facilitating.
OFL/OFY staff members committed to becoming an Equity Facilitator (a person leading courageous conversations about race with their colleagues). If you are interested in attending, talk to your school leaders to sign up.
