TOOLS FOR COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS

Resources for creating and maintaining a safe, fair environment where people can be authentic and secure in sharing their truths with others.

The following tools are used regularly with supporting Courageous Conversations:

COMPASS

Courageous Conversation Compass

When diving into a topic, people approach conversations in one of four categories: emotional, moral, relational, or intellectual. In order to better understand one another and create a cohesive community, we have to be cognizant of which quadrant we primarily operate from as well as which direction other participants are coming from. The compass is a personal navigational tool designed to help us self-reflect as well as be become aware of how others process, contextualize, or react to the discussions that take place.

FOUR AGREEMENTS

Four agreements of
Courageous Conversation

The Four Agreements establish ground rules and common norms for all participants to follow during the Courageous Conversations. These four guidelines keep the conversations fair, secure, and focused on what truly matters.

EQUITY
TERMINOLOGY

A Framework

The purpose of the terminology guide stems from what Glenn E. Singleton explained in Courageous Conversations about Race, “This is not to suggest that a single definition is available or even that one must be embraced. I do, however, believe that it is important that I provide a clear understanding of the meaning I intend when I use racial terminology” (50). Use this guide to provide you a framework to work from when speaking about matters pertaining to race, equity, and culture.
